Maclntyre Ancestry Perthshire Scotland

Duncan Ban Maclntyre, 1724-1812, Poet, was born on 20th March 1724 in Glen Orchy on the Argyll and Perthshire border; there he worked as a gamekeeper and forester, and the experience of being in such close contact with nature was to exert a considerable influence on much of his later poetry. Another influence was the Reverend James Stewart of Killin who may have introduced Mac an t-Saoir to the poetry of the time. When Mac an t-Saoir began to compose his own poetry it was the minister's son, John, who wrote down the works, and edited them and prepared them for press in 1768, for the poet was not able to write himself, even though his linguistic skills and ability to compose were developed to an astonishing degree. Shortly before the publication of his poems he moved to Edinburgh, where he served in the City Guard and later as a soldier in the Breadalbane Fencibles. Although he continued to write in Edinburgh, mainly satires on the manners of the city, he had no contact with its literary society and it is safe to say that his best work had been written in the earlier part of his life. In all his nature poetry Mac an t-Saoir brought a freshness of observation to his detailed descriptions of the countryside and the birds and animals that populate the high hills of the country of his birth. No single item seems to be too small to excite his curiosity; in 'Orain Coire a cheathaich' ('Song of the misty Corrie'), for example, a complete picture is painted of the sights and sounds of a burn running through a mountain corrie, and the birds and deer that have made it their home. That visual quality is found again in his long poem 'Moladh Beinn Dobhrainn' ('The praise of Ben Doran'). Although the mountain and its scenery form the centre-point of his praise, Mac an t-Saoir reserves particular approbation for the deer, imbuing them almost with human qualities as they go about their daily business. The poem is also memorable for its intricate rhyming structure which resembles the formal patterns of pibroch or ceol mor, the classical music of the Highland bagpipe. In all Mac an t-Saoir's nature poetry, which is the finest exposition of his art, it is possible to experience the poet's own warmth of feeling for nature and the positive delight that he took in its beauties. His richly evocative language and the brio of his descriptions make Mac an t-Saoir one of the most remarkable celebrants of nature in either Scots or Gaelic.
Praise poems of a different kind were written for the Campbells, and although these are formal, technically correct offerings, Mac an t-Saoir achieves a sense of genuine feeling in the lament for Colin Campbell of Glenure, who was killed in the Appin murder of 1752. Other examples of his poetic style in the 1768 collection include love poems, satires and drinking-songs.

Michael Bruce Kinnesswood Perthshire Scotland

Michael Bruce, (1746-67). Poet. He was born on 27th March 1746 in Kinnesswood, Kinross, Perthshire, Scotland. The son of a weaver, Alexander Bruce; from his father he gained an early knowledge of the songs and stories of the folk tradition, as well as a grounding in the teaching of the Secessionist Church. After an education at the village school, he matriculated at the University of Edinburgh in 1762 and later became a teacher in the village of Gairney Bridge, where the Secessionist Church had been founded in 1721 by Ebenezer Erskine. In 1766 Bruce studied for the ministry and attended the Burger Synod Theological Hall in Kinross. He taught again at the end of
that year at Forest Mill near Tillicoultry, but illness forced him to return home early in the following year. He died of consumption on 5th ]uly l767. Although most of Bruce's poetry is juvenile his 'Elegy to Spring', a melancholy lament for his own early death, is worthy of attention. He also improved a number of paraphrases, including the stirring Paraphrase 18 of Isiah 2. 2-6. After Bruce's death his college friend John Logan collected his poems for publication in 1770. In later years he claimed that Bruce's best-known poem, 'Ode to the Cuckoo', was his own, and for a time controversy surrounded the authorship of the poem, which was popular for the clarity of its language and the bittersweet sadness of its imagery.
Works: Poems on Several Occasions (1770); The Buchanshire Tragedy (1776); Sir James the Ross (1805); Lochleven (1822); An Elegy to Spring (1833).

Dugald Buchanan Perthshire Scotland

Dugald Buchanan, (1716—68). Poet. He was a native of Ardoch in Strathyre, Perthshire. His education at the parish school was rudimentary and at the age of 14 he left Strathyre to live in Stirling and then in Edinburgh, where he remained until he was 18. He was then apprenticed to a carpenter and after marrying he returned to his native parish, but his new occupation offered little inner satisfaction. During this period the religious manifestations that had haunted him as a child became an obsession, and his diary, kept between 1741 and 1750, contains frightening descriptions of his spiritual struggles between good and evil. He became a travelling teacher and his work as an evangelist led to his being licensed as a preacher in 1753. He assisted with the publication of the first edition of the Gaelic New Testament and his own poems were published in 1767, a year before his death from fever in Kinloch Rannoch. All Buchanan's poems and songs reflect his fascination for subjects religious and moral, and his long poem La a Bhreitheanais ('The Day of Judgement') is preoccupied with the origin of evil and with the terrors that face the damned. There is little of the milk of human kindness or the balm of God's mercy in the poem, which is, nevertheless, made vivid and alive by Bochanan's lovingly described vision of the torments of the souls in hell. His songs, though didactic, offer a more contented view of the human condition and advocate a personal morality which eschews avarice and ambition and turns instead to the precepts of the scriptures.

William Archer Perth Perthshire Scotland

William Archer, (1856-1924), Critic, was born on 23rd September 1856 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, and was educated there and at the University of Edinburgh. After graduating he studied for the English Bar but by then he had turned to journalism for a living. He worked first for the Evening News in Edinburgh, and between 1879 and 1881, by which time he had moved to London, he was employed as the drama critic of Figaro. From then until the end of his life Archer devoted himself to the theatre through his work as a critic for The World, The Nation, Tribune, the Morning Leader and the Manchester Guardian: he became one of the most influential critics of the day with a firm belief in good dramatic structure and high standards of stagecraft. He died in London on 27 December 1924. Although he did much to revitalize the English theatre through his outspoken criticism, it is as the translator of the works of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (1826—1906) that Archer is best remembered; it was in his translations of the prose dramas, collected in four volumes (1890—91), and the complete works, published in 11 volumes (1906-7), that Ibsen's work was introduced to the theatre in England. In 1923 Archer's own play The Green Goddess was staged successfully in London, two years after it opened in New York. His other dramatic works are War is War, Martha Washington, Beatrice Juana and Lidia. Many of his journalistic writings were collected in book form and among his writings on the theory of theatre may be mentioned Masks or Faces (1888) and Play-making (1912), which were considered the standard works on the art of stagecraft and plot. Archer was also a campaigning journalist with interests in
criminology, rational humanism and race relations, and with Harley Granville-Barker
(1877-1946) and others he was active in the drive to create a national theatre.
Works: with R. W. Lowe, The Fashionable Tragedian (1877); English Dramatists of Today (1882); Henry Irving: a Critical Study (1883); Henry Irving: Actor and Manager (1884); About the Theatre (1886); Masks or Faces (1888); William Charles Macready (1890); Study and Stage (1899); America Today (1900); Poets of the Younger Generation (1902); Real Conversations (1904); Shirking the Issue (1904); A National Theatre: Scheme and Estimates (1907); Through Afro-America (1910); The Life, Trial and Death of Francisco Ferrer (1911); Play-making (1912); Fighting a Philosophy (1914); The Thirteen Days: 23 July - 4 August 1914 (1915); Colour-blind Neutrality (1916); Knowledge and Character (1916); 501 Gems of German Thought (1917); God and the Wells (1917); India and the Future (1917); Six of One and Half-a-dozen of the Other (1917); The Villains of World Tragedy (1917); The Peace-President (1918); The Pirate's Progress (1918); War is War (l919); The Green Goddess (1923); The Old Drama and The New (1923); Three Plays (1927); The Great Analysis (1931); On Dreams (1935).

Patrick Adamson Perth Perthshire Scotland

Patrick Adamson (1537-92). Divine. He was a native of Perth, Perthshire, Scotland and was educated at the University of St Andrews, from which he graduated in 1558. Between then and 1566, when he travelled to Paris and Italy as a private tutor, he was minister of the parish of Ceres in Fife. His first verses, written in Latin, were strenuous, if conventional, attacks on excesses in the Catholic Church, and his Protestant leanings were strengthened during his stay in Europe. Among his sacred works were translations of the book of Job into Latin hexameters and a Latin translation of the Scottish Confession of Faith. By 1571 he was back in Scotland to take the charge of Paisley and over the next 20 years he was drawn increasingly into Scottish church politics. To the disgust of many of his more extreme colleagues he accepted the archbishopric of St Andrews in 1576 and later historians, such as David Calderwood, went out of their way to misrepresent him as a licentious buffoon. Andrew Melville, Principal of St Mary's College in St Andrews, became a feared opponent in debate as he constantly quizzed Adamson's adherence to Episcopalianism. Having relied for many years on the support of james VI, Adamson was dismayed to find that by 1590 the king had switched his allegiance to Melville; the final years of his life were spent in poverty and disgrace. He died on 19 February 1592. As most of the facts about Adamson's life come from biased accounts in Calderwood and from the diary of the reformer James Melville, it is difficult to form a firm judgement of his ability and influence. He made accomplished translations of biblical texts into Latin and enjoyed a substantial reputation as a Latinist in Europe.
