Perth and Kinross Illustrated Architectural Guide

Perth and Kinross Illustrated Architectural Guide. The Fair City of Perth is the starting point for this much sought after guide in the RIAS and Landmark Trust Series. The Gateway to the Highlands, it was second only to Berwick in terms of wealth by 1200 and a meeting place of parliaments and general councils when Scone Palace and the Stone of Destiny witnessed the coronations of Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Charles II.

Magical buildings abound in the surrounding countryside: Taymouth Castle, the extraordinary powerhouse of the Campbells of Breadalbane; Dunkeld Cathedral with its hauntingly romantic setting of trees and lawns beside the broad, dark and deceptively tranquil Tay; Blair Castle, Highland romanticism at its most spectacular, the home of Europe's last surviving private army, the Atholl Highlanders, and Loch Leven Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner until escaping with the help of Daft Willie. The Reformation in Perth

The Reformation in Perth 1540-1570. On 11 May 1559, a riot erupted in Perth which resulted in an open revolt against the authority of the Regent, Mary of Guise, and her 'foreign' religion. On that day the Scottish Reformation slipped out of its covert phase and began to gather momentum as a revolution. The enthusiastic response by the townspeople of Perth to John Knox's preaching is widely documented. The question of why this happened in Perth remains unanswered. This account of Perth in the sixteenth century addresses the question of 'why Perth?' and reveals some answers to what lay behind the iconoclastic riot of 1559. A tradition of radicalism amongst certain burgesses had proved to be eminently successful over the decades preceding 1559. Political activism had resulted in some very successful manipulations of the system of town government and the extension of these processes to religion was a natural progression. This pattern of reform was unique amongst Scottish towns but was to be found in certain continental cities, where laymen's political ambitions often had as much or more to do with shaping urban reformations than did religious conviction. This work complements the regional studies of the Scottish Reformation already in print and draws upon more than a decade of research into the phenomenon of urban reformations across Europe. Written in a narrative style and supported by extensive documentation, it will appeal to those with a general interest in the development of the Scottish reformation, as well as to an academic readership. Perthshire

Perthshire, Perth and Kinross, at the geographical heart of Scotland, contain buildings which range from the remains of a Roman line of forts and watch towers, the fort at Ardoch, of the first and second centuries, is one of the best preserved and least known of such structures in Britain, early historic hill forts, a remarkable array of carved stones erected by the warrior aristocracy of the sixth to ninth centuries, the wilfully inventive medieval Dunkeld Cathedral, and mottes, castles and tower houses, among them the island fortress of Lochleven Castle and Elcho Castle's assertion of baronial status. The grandiose funerary monuments of the seventeenth century at Scone Palace and the Kinoull Aisle presaged the 'court' classicism of Sir William Bruce, which is exemplified by his own mansion, garden and landscape at Kinross House. Blair Castle's mid-eighteenth century stucco work, unequalled in Scotland, celebrates the magnificence of the Dukes of Atholl, this display challenged in the early nineteenth century by the sumptuous Gothic palaces of Scone and Taymouth Castle. A multitude of smaller country houses embrace a variety of styles, classical, Italianate, castellated and Baronial, while Georgian and Victorian churches, many with superb stained glass, abound. Among towns and villages, Dunkeld is the epitome of a small Scottish burgh while the Royal burgh of Perth has expanded from its medieval core with the addition of late Georgian 'new towns' and civic and industrial monuments of the nineteenth century.
